Skilled deals with politicians

  • The extremely strategic and intelligent Hitler was also very patient and would wait for the right opportunity to slowly gain power. He would skillfully make deals to advance his position and it was one of the reasons how Hitler rose in prominence in the late 1920s.

  • By 1930, the Nazis won 37.3% of the seats in parliament, making them the majority.

  • In January 1933, after many negotiations, Hidenburg and von Papen reluctantly invited Hitler to be Chancellor after making a deal. They mistakenly thought that Hitler would get them the support they needed in the Reichstag as the Nazi Party had the majority of votes during the Nov 1932 elections.

  • President Hindenburg and the previous Chancellor, von Papen, both thought that if Hitler was the Chancellor, the communists would be kept under control.

  • HOWEVER!

    • Everything went according to Hitler's plan and he ruled in a coalition government as a result of the politicians who underestimated Hitler and made the deal with him.

    • Hitler patiently waited for the right time, then proceeded to take complete control over the government.

    • Within months of being Chancellor, Hitler ended the Weimar Government and banned all other political parties except the Nazis.
